𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝐧𝐝, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒.
The second edition of the Kakamega Governor’s Cup came to an end on Monday, 1st January, 2024 at Bukhungu International Stadium, where at least 1,000 teams participated in Soccer (Men and Women), Volleyball (Men and Women), and Netball Women from across the 60 Wards.
In the closing ceremony, graced by the former Premier Rt. Hon Raila Odinga, Young Simba from Shinyalu Sub-County secured victory in men football category, earning KSh. 2 million, the coveted trophy and medals, while Maroon Commandos settled for KSh. 1.5 million.
Etenje Ward’s finest Buchifi FC had earlier bagged Ksh. 1 million after beating Butali FC, who equally settled for Ksh. 500,000, after emerging second and third runners-up respectively.
Hon. Raila called on the National Government to complement the Kakamega Governor H.E. FCPA Fernandes Barasa’s efforts in ensuring timely completion of Bukhungu Stadium, in readiness for AFCON 2027, which he insisted should be held at the iconic stadium.
FCPA Barasa who is also the Patron of the Governor’s Cup, in his remarks promised to enhance government strategies in identifying and nurturing talents beyond sports, music and the arts across the County.
Before the Final match, Kenya Premier League’s Kakamega Homeboyz fell to their home rivals AFC Leopards with a 0-1 loss in a curtain raiser match played at the same venue.
In a hotly contested soccer women’s fixture, Lwandeti Ladies triumphed, earning themselves KSh. 1 million while Booker Queens settled for KSh. 750,000. Mulembe Central and Kakamega All-Stars secured KSh. 500,000 and KSh. 250,000 as second and third runners-up respectively.
The cash prizes for Netball Women and Volleyball Men and Women were equally handsome, after being set at KSh. 500,000 for the winners, and KSh. 250,000 for 1st runners-up.
In Netball, Khwisero’s Shirotsa Queens went home with the top prize after defeating Rockers. In Volleyball men, Kings had something for the new year after cruising past Lunyinya at MMUST grounds, as Namundera took the award in the Women category, leaving Malava Starlets to settle for the first runners-up position.
Celebrations have spread across the County as teams from various wards arrive today with the KSh.10 million cash prizes and trophies.
ODM Deputy Party Leader Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, Governor Wilber Ottichilo (Vihiga), MPs Johnson Naicca, Christopher Aseka, Oscar Nabulindo, Nabii Nabwera, Jack Wamboka and Innocent Mugabe, CRA Commissioner Hadija Nganyi, Kakamega Speaker James Namatsi, MCAs, County Officials led by the County Secretary and Head of Public Service Dr. Lawrence Omuhaka, sports officials and legends together with almost 10,000 fans attended the grand final.
