COUNTY CAPACITY BUILDS EXTENSION OFFICERS ON WEATHER FORECAST

The County Government of Kakamega, in partnership with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the FAO Tunza Project, has today conducted a capacity-building exercise for county extension officers on the interpretation of weather forecasts to enhance farmer advisory services for both crop and livestock farmers.

The training focused on Digital Climate Advisory Services and understanding weather information for proper dissemination through Farmer Field Schools, enabling farmers to access timely climate information and make informed decisions for proper farm planning.

Speaking during the exercise, acting County Director for Agriculture, Mr. Francis Muhenge, and Deputy BB Hb Director for Livestock, Mr. Anthony Mwangi, noted that proper interpretation of weather forecasts will enable extension workers to adequately advise farmers on specific, value-chain-tailored practices; thereby contributing to increased food security in line with Governor Fernandes Barasa’s Food Security pillar.

County FAO Desk Officer, Dr. Simon Ndung’u, noted that through partnerships, Kakamega County farmers are set to receive adequate farming knowledge and climate information to support agricultural production, especially amid the changing climate.

International Center for Tropical Agriculture Program Officer, Ms. Ann Mucemi, committed to continuously collaborating with the County Government of Kakamega to ensure farmers acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance food security.

Present during the exercise was Western Region Meteorological Director, Mr. Vincent Sakwa, among other officials.
