COUNTY, CHESHIRE DISABILITY, MUMIAS EARC TRAIN CHPs, CAREGIVERS ON SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

8The County Government of Kakamega, through the Department of Health Services, in partnership with Cheshire Disability and Mumias EARC, have conducted a two-day training for Community Health Promoters (CHPs), parents and caregivers on supporting children with special needs through Early Childhood Development (ECD) play under the Care With A Touch (CWAT) project.

The training focused on using locally made play materials to promote brain development, independence and overall wellbeing among children with special needs.

Speaking during the training, County Disability Mainstreaming Coordinator, Ms. Faith Owour, emphasised the importance of play in enhancing the development and independence of children with special needs, in line with Governor Fernandes Barasa’s Quality Healthcare Pillar.

Cheshire Disability Program Officer, Mrs. Lucy Obiri, demonstrated various locally made play materials and encouraged parents and caregivers to share the knowledge with other families.

Mumias EARC Project Team Lead, Dr. Sellar Oduor, reaffirmed the partnership with Kakamega County, noting plans to cascade the training to the remaining nine sub-counties. The current training covered Mumias East, Mumias West and Matungu.
