CGK, FAO HOLD GREEN CLIMATE FUND’S TUNZA PROJECT SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP FOR LREB COUNTIES

The County Government of Kakamega, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), today hosted a multi-stakeholder workshop for Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) county officials to sensitize and plan for the roll-out of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Tunza Project.

The project, themed “Transforming Livelihoods Through Climate Resilient, Low Carbon Agricultural Value Chains,” targets 14 counties in the LREB region, focusing on restoring degraded landscapes, strengthening climate resilience, and promoting sustainable farming systems.

Speaking at the official opening of the workshop, Chief Officer for Environment and Natural Resources, CPA Bill Silingi, hailed FAO for enabling LREB counties to access the Green Climate Fund, the world’s largest climate financing mechanism under the UNFCCC.

“The Lake Region is endowed with fertile agricultural land, forests, minerals, and Lake Victoria. But unsustainable practices and climate change have caused land degradation. This initiative gives us an opportunity to adopt integrated natural resource management, reforestation, and landscape restoration to boost productivity and secure livelihoods,” Silingi said.

He noted that the project will complement the World Bank-funded Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme, which has already advanced community-driven climate solutions in the counties. Beneficiary wards and farmer groups have been identified and sensitized in readiness for implementation.

The workshop brought together FAO representatives, LREB Secretariat officials, environment focal persons, and county directors responsible for climate programmes.
