COUNTY COLLABORATES WITH NATIONAL GOVERNMENT IN TREE PLANTING DRIVE IN LURAMBI SUB-COUNTY
The County Government of Kakamega through the Ministry of Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change led by the CECM, Mrs. Penina Mukabane, today joined the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Ms. Deborah Mulongo Barasa at a tree planting campaign in Ikonyero area, Butsotso Central Ward of Lurambi Sub-county.
While representing Governor Fernandes Barasa at the Ceremony, Mrs. Mukabane stated that Kakamega County through Governor Fernandes Barasa’s leadership is committed to ensure it contributes to the 15 billion tree planting drive set by the National Government through the Climate Change department.
Mrs. Peninah, further, noted that through tree planting, Kakamega County is set to achieve food security as one in every three trees planted are fruit trees that offer nutrition for better health of the people. Currently, Kakamega County has planted over 21 million trees through the Climate Change department.
CS. Deborah Mulongo Barasa on her part called for collective responsibility in planting trees while asking residents of Kakamega County to, each, plant three trees a month to help in attaining the 15 billion tree cover target by 2032.
Present in the function was the Principal Secretary, State Department for Forestry, Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, Kakamega County Commissioner, Mr. Michael Mwangi Meru, Chief Officer Environment and Sanitation CPA Bill Silingi among others.
