GOVERNOR BARASA URGES RESIDENTS TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS AHEAD OF HEAVY RAINS

H.E. Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, has today urged residents of Kakamega County to take precautionary measures ahead of the anticipated heavy rains in order to safeguard lives and property. The Governor particularly called on residents living along major river banks, including River Nzoia, Yala, Lusumu and Isiukhu, to move to higher and safer grounds as a preventive measure against possible flooding.
The Governor also directed artisanal gold miners operating in Ikolomani, Lurambi and Shinyalu sub-counties to temporarily suspend mining activities until the rains subside. He warned that mining during the rainy season exposes miners to serious dangers such as landslides and flooding, emphasizing that the safety of residents must remain a priority.
Governor Barasa further commended the strong working relationship between the national government and the county government, noting that the collaboration is accelerating development across the county. He cited key projects including the ongoing development of Bukhungu Stadium, the construction of Kakamega Level Six Hospital, roads infrastructure and the County Aggregation and Industrial Park in Likuyani as major milestones that will significantly improve service delivery and the economy.
The Governor also updated residents on the progress of several county projects, including the upcoming commissioning of Khabondi ECDE Centre, the planned resumption of works on the Harambee–Khaunga tarmac road, connection of water from Malaha to Khaunga, and the construction of Khaunga Health Centre. He spoke during the funeral service of the late Peter Babuchi Kandia in the Khabondi area, East Wanga Ward, Mumias East Sub-County.
He was accompanied by the First Lady Prof. Janet Kassily Barasa, Deputy Governor H.E. Ayub Savula, Members of the County Assembly led by area MCA Hon. Francis Washika, members of the County Executive Committee led by CECM for Public Service and County Administration Dr. Bonface Okoth, alongside other leaders.
