KAKAMEGA COUNTY MARKS WORLD WHEELCHAIR DAY 2026

The County Government of Kakamega today marked World Wheelchair Day 2026 at Bukhungu Stadium, joining the global community in promoting mobility, inclusion and dignity for persons with disabilities.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor H.E. Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, County Secretary and Head of Public Service Dr. Lawrence Omuhaka reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening disability support programmes and expanding access to assistive devices, particularly for children with mobility challenges. He also lauded the 11-day awareness journey from Kijabe to Kakamega that championed disability rights and pediatric wheelchairs.
During the event, wheelchairs were distributed through a partnership between the County Government and BethanyKids, significantly boosting mobility and independence for beneficiaries.
Among those present were the host MCA Hon. Modesta Auka of Mahiakalo Ward, nominated MCA Hon. Timothy Aseka, CECM for Social Services CPA Jackline Masicha, Chief Officers led by Ms. Christine Oside and other county officials and stakeholders.
