Following a directive by H.E FCPA Fernandes Barasa at the sidelines of the African Climate Summit, the Hydrobox project implementation committee, led by Ms. Penina Mukabane, the CECM for Water, Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, visited Mathioya Constituency in Muranga County to assess the feasibility of the project in Kakamega County.

Hydrobox, a project funded by Netfund, specializes in hydropower generation by using innovative renewable energy technology from Belgium to create waterfalls. They collaborate with a local innovator in Mathioya; Magiro Power, through a public-private partnership (PPP) to run turbines within a containerized plant, providing sustainable electricity to 500 households and a nearby tea factory within an 18-20 km radius.

The hydropower project is planned for three regions of Kakamega County, offering an impressive 97% uptime and cost-effectiveness. This initiative will greatly benefit the local business community, agricultural cottage industries, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and water projects.

Accompanying the CECM on this visit were CO – Environment Mr. Justin Mutobera, KICDA CEO Elizabeth Asichi, Mr. Peter Juma Mwombe (KICDA Board), and Directors of Environment, Energy, and Investment from the County Government, along with representatives from NETFUND and GIZ.
