CECM for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives, Mr. Mophat Mandela, today led departmental officers in a productive engagement with the County Assemblyβs Monitoring and Implementation Committee to address key sustainability challenges facing the Kakamega Dairy Development Corporation (KDDC).
Mr. Mandela outlined a comprehensive recovery plan that includes phasing out non-productive animals, expanding fodder production, cutting feed costs through on-farm formulation, and introducing additional income-generating services such as Artificial Insemination (AI) and heifer multiplication. He also emphasized the importance of granting KDDC financial autonomy to improve efficiency and long-term sustainability.
Livestock Chief Officer Ms. Jesca Weku echoed the departmentβs commitment to the turnaround strategy, noting that they were prioritizing efficiency and accountability across all Smart Farms to ensure that every shilling invested yielded real value for both farmers and the county.
The CEC assured the Committee that with these interventions, the Corporation is expected to achieve financial self-reliance within the next year. The department remains committed to reviving KDDC and strengthening Smart Farms as vital contributors to agricultural development in Kakamega County.
Present were Hon Absolom Andati, MCA Ingotse Matiha, who led the committee alongside KDDC CEO, Mr Ezekiel Lumbasi and other officials.
