Following the launch of the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP) agripreneur model on 29th July, in Kakamega county, under the World Bank’s revised project guidelines on remuneration, payments are now performance-based as demonstrated in their first month, unlike the previous arrangement where agripreneurs received a fixed monthly stipend of KSh 10,000.
Under the new model, each agripreneur earns KSh 500 for every Common Interest Group (CIG) they register, in addition to KSh 3,000 to cater for transport and internet bundles. Each agripreneur operates within his or her designated ward or zone, and every CIG must comprise at least 15 members actively engaged in a specific value chain.
In Kakamega County, 420 resident agripreneurs were engaged in the program. Of these, only 18 failed to register any farmers, resulting in minimal payments that directly reflected their lack of output. Some of these agrepreneurs have since taken to social media to tarnish the image of the program and the County Government.
We wish to emphasize that any concerns arising from the implementation of this program should be addressed through the established executive channels. Resorting to insults, misinformation, or disorderly conduct is unacceptable and undermines a program that is jointly implemented by both the County and National Governments in partnership with the World Bank.
It is further important to note that under the revised NAVCDP model, agripreneurs’ results are evaluated every month, and only those who meet the required standards proceed to sign contracts with a business accelerator for incubation and further support.
The County Government, through the Department of Agriculture, remains committed to supporting all agripreneurs who follow due process and deliver tangible results for farmers. However, indiscipline and disregard for established protocols will not be condoned.
