Kakamega County’s fairly warm climate, sufficient rainfall, and suitable soil pH makes it an ideal region for sunflower cultivation. This not only generates much-needed income for farmers but also enhances agricultural diversity.
H.E FCPA Fernandes Barasa distributed 15,000 kg of sunflower seeds at Kakamega NCPB deport to the County’s 60 wards, benefiting 6,840 farmers. Each farmer received enough seeds to plant approximately 5,000 acres, with each acre requiring 3 kg of seeds.
This initiative, a collaboration between the County Government of Kakamega and the Agriculture Food Authority (AFA), is expected to yield 4,000 tons of sunflower seeds. These seeds will be processed into 1 million liters of oil, valued at Ksh 200 million. Most of the produce will be processed at the upcoming County Aggregation and Industrial Park in Likuyani.
Present were MCAs, County Officials and Administrators.
