H.E. Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa today joined the family, friends,Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) fraternity, and mourners at Jamia Mosque in Kakamega to pay his final respects to the late Professor Hassan Were Karakacha — a respected scholar of Molecular Plant Virology in the School of Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences, and Technology.
In his tribute, Governor Barasa described the late professor as a towering figure in academia whose dedication to research, teaching, and mentorship helped position MMUST as a hub of academic excellence.
“Prof. Karakacha was a beacon of knowledge and integrity. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” the Governor said.
He further reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting academic growth and strengthening partnerships with institutions of higher learning across Kakamega County.
The late Prof. Karakacha was the husband of Ms. Mariam Were Nyongesa, the Chief Officer for Water and Sanitation in the County Government of Kakamega.
Also present were First Lady Prof. Janet Kassily Barasa, Prof. Hussein Golicha (DVC – Academic and Student Affairs), representing MMUST Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo, senior university officials, MCAs, County Executives, and other dignitaries who paid glowing tributes to a man remembered for his humility, intellect, and passion for using science to impact lives.
