H.E. FCPA Fernandes Barasa coordinated a successful fundraiser today at Holy Spirit Bulimbo Catholic Church, hosting the Chief Guest, Speaker of the National Assembly Rt. Hon Moses Wetangula and other dignitaries, to support the Church’s infrastructural development.

In their speeches, the leaders urged the National Government to back sugarcane farming, criticizing certain provisions of the Finance Act, 2023 which they said hinders the sector’s growth by subjecting farmers to pay extra taxes.

Governor Barasa, while emphasizing these sentiments, in his capacity as LREB’s Champion for Revitalization of the Sugar Sector, appealed to the National Government to stop the recent announcement by some millers of dropping the price of sugarcane tonnage from the current KSh6,000 per tonne to below KSh5,000.

Speaker Wetangula assured that the National Government would address the concerns raised by the leaders, while at the same time backing his colleagues who called for the Western region’s unity of purpose.

The event was also attended by Governors Paul Otuoma (Busia) and Kenneth Lusaka (Bungoma), Deputy Governor Hon. Ayub Savula, Roots Party Leader Prof. George Wajackoyah, several MPs, MCAs, County Officials from Bungoma, Busia and the host Kakamega and faithfuls.
