JICA TEAM PAYS A COURTESY CALL ON KAKAMEGA DEPUTY GOVERNOR

Kakamega Deputy Governor H.E Ayub Savula, on behalf of H.E FCPA Governor Fernandes Barasa, hosted Mr. Kentaro Hotta Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Solid Waste Management Advisor and a delegation from RegenOrganics.

Hon Savula appreciated the team for the visit and acknowledged that the County Government is faced with waste management challenges hence the need to explore ways of solving the menace through partnerships with investors and development partners.

The meeting that was initiated by RegenOrganics in collaboration with Kakamega County Investment and Development Agency (KCIDA ) sought to find amicable solution to urban centres waste segregation following the successful onboarding of RegenOrganics to Kakamega County.

Mr. Hotta pointed out that JICA has collaborated with RegenOrganics in waste management projects in Nairobi and Kiambu Counties and stated their willingness to initiate a pilot project for market waste segregation in Kakamega County.

Chief Officer for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate change Mr. Justin Mutobera noted that the County needs to create awareness on waste disposal in urban centres including proper transfer of waste at the designated refuse chambers. He expressed optimism that the upcoming Fertilizer Manufacturing Plant will help to curb waste pollution in urban centres across the County.

Ms. Elizabeth Asichi, KCIDA Chief Executive Officer on her part welcomed JICA’s support that aims to improve waste management from linear to circular economy as per the Sustainable Waste Management Act of 2022.

The team later visited Rosterman Dumpsite in Kakamega Municipality and Shianda Market in Mumias East Sub-County.
