The launch marks the beginning of the race for countywide honours, with teams from all 60 wards competing through ward and sub-county stages before the County Bonanza finals scheduled for 1 January 2027.
At the ward level, men’s football teams will compete for KSh50,000, KSh30,000 and KSh20,000 for first, second and third positions, respectively. In the women’s category, winners will receive KSh60,000, with runners-up taking home KSh40,000.
The stakes will be even higher at the County Bonanza finals. Men’s football champions will walk away with KSh2 million, followed by KSh1.5 million for second place, KSh1 million for third and KSh750,000 for fourth. Beyond football, this year’s tournament features rugby, volleyball, netball and athletics in both men’s and women’s categories. It also introduces Granny Games, giving older women an opportunity to participate in sporting activities, interact and maintain active lifestyles.
Speaking during the launch, Governor Barasa said his administration remains committed to developing sports at the grassroots, noting that the tournament provides an important platform for identifying and nurturing talent, empowering young people and bringing communities together.
The opening fixtures set the competition in motion, with Malava FC playing to a goalless draw against Mugai FC, while defending champions Lugusi FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Santos FC. Lugusi FC are seeking to retain the title they won in the previous edition after defeating Mbaabo FC of Khwisero.
