KAKAMEGA COUNTY ROLLS OUT COUNTY-WIDE DISTRIBUTION OF BLANKETS AND MATTRESSES TO LEARNERS WITH DISABILITIES
The Department of Social Services, Sports, Youth, Gender, and Culture, under the leadership of CECM, Ms. Jackline Masicha, has commenced a county-wide exercise to distribute blankets and mattresses to pupils living with disabilities across all 12 sub-counties.
The initiative kicked off today at Siyombe Primary Special Unit in Navakholo, where 15 learners with disabilities benefited, before proceeding to Lung’anyiro School for the Disabled in Matungu, Sunrise School in Mumias West, and Rise and Shine School in Mumias East.
Speaking during the exercise, Ms. Masicha urged parents not to hide children with disabilities at home, emphasizing that they deserve equal rights and opportunities like any other child. She encouraged parents to bring them forward to benefit from government support, including access to assistive devices.
This support aligns with Governor Fernandes Barasa’s manifesto, which prioritizes inclusive education and ensures that every learner enjoys their right to quality learning and dignity.The distribution continues today, Wednesday, 10th September, at Mukhonje Special School in Shinyalu, Busilwa Special School for the Mentally Handicapped in Ikolomani, Ematundu Special Needs in Khwisero, and Butere Mental School in Butere.
The team will conclude the program with visits to Kakamega School for the Deaf in Lurambi, Malava Special Primary School in Malava, Mukuyu Special School in Lugari, and Vincent de Paul Special School in Likuyani.
Also present during the distribution was the Director of Culture, Ms. Gaudencia Otipa, among other senior officials.
