ARTISANAL MINING CENTER TO TRANSFORM MINING PRACTICES IN KAKAMEGA
The Artisanal Mining Training Center currently under construction at Rosterman will play a significant role in transforming artisanal mining practices within the county.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Ms. Peninah Mukabane Tuesday inspected ongoing works at the facility and assured that it will impart modern, sustainable, and environmentally friendly mining skills to artisanal miners
The CECM emphasized that the center will also advocate for elimination of mercury use in gold extraction, a major environmental and health concern currently.
The collaborative initiative with the National Government and development partners including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Planet Gold mirrors the countyโs commitment to promoting responsible mining practices and protecting the environment while ensuring that artisanal miners benefit from safer and more productive methods of extraction.
Once operational, the Center is expected to serve as a model for similar projects across the region, aligning with global efforts to promote sustainable and inclusive mining.
