SACCOS URGED TO SUPPORT SMALL-SCALE FARMING

Members of the County Agricultural Sector Steering Committee today reviewed the progress of key agricultural development initiatives such as IFAD, RK-FINFA focal project and the NAVCDP currently being implemented in the county in collaboration with development partners.
Chief Officer for Cooperatives Mr. Daniel Sumba chaired the consultative forum and expressed satisfaction with implementation status of ongoing projects and commended stakeholders for their commitment to strengthening project coordination and improving outcomes for farmers across the county.
Mr. Sumba underscored the critical role played by Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOS) in accelerating growth in small-scale farming and urged them to actively support cooperatives through structured capacity-building programs, as well as provision of grants and low interest loans to boost farmer productivity and financial resilience.
The CO further challenged SACCOs to incorporate youth into cooperative structures, noting that young people possess skills needed to modernize agriculture and enhance its sustainability.
Mr. Henry Marende, the Chief Officer in charge of Special Programmes, reaffirmed the county’s commitment to fostering partnerships that enhance agricultural value chains and livelihoods for smallholder farmers.
The consultative forum underscored the importance of collaboration among government departments, financial institutions and cooperatives in driving inclusive agricultural growth and strengthening the backbone of small-scale farming in the county.
