STAKEHOLDERS LAUD CANE FARMERS’ FIELD DAY, TERM IT A BOOST TO FOOD SECURITY EFFORTS

Key stakeholders in the cane farming industry on Wednesday discussed measures of promoting sustainable farming practices with an aim of improving crop yields and profitability in Kakamega County through biological plant protection.
The stakeholders involved County Government officers led by the CECM for Agriculture Mr Mophat Mandela, Cereal Growers Association, Bayer East Africa, OCP and YARA who continue to support farmers through initiatives such as the Farm to Market Alliance and Trans-Agri programs.
In his speech, Mr. Mandela urged the farmers to take advantage of subsidized fertilizer provided by the County Government and register for e-vouchers to ensure a seamless and transparent distribution process. He also cautioned against cane poaching and encouraged farmer diversification.
Farmers were introduced to new sugarcane varieties preferred for processing and capable of meeting required quality thresholds. The program provided comprehensive capacity building, including cane treatment, fertilizer and soil testing, use of biopesticides and herbicides and demonstrations showcasing the entire value chain from harvesting to processing through Mumias Sugar Company.
Chief Officer for Cooperatives Mr. Daniel Sumba ephasized the importance of farmers joining cooperatives to benefit from collective marketing, access to inputs and financial services.
