GOVERNOR BARASA FLAGS OFF KENYA’S CHAMPS FROM KAKAMEGA FOR EAST AFRICA GAMES.

H.E. Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, OGW, this evening hosted Green Commandos and St. Martha’s Mwitoti Girls Volleyball Team for dinner before flagging them off to represent Kakamega County and Kenya at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.

The Governor congratulated the teams for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Championships in Thika, urging them to remain disciplined, united and focused as they compete at the regional level.

Governor Barasa presented KSh 300,000 to support the teams’ preparations, with KSh 200,000 awarded to Green Commandos of Kakamega High School and KSh 100,000 to St. Martha’s Mwitoti Girls Volleyball Team. Green Commandos were crowned national boys’ football champions after defeating St. Mary’s School Yala 3-2 in a thrilling final, while St. Martha’s Mwitoti Girls secured a third-place finish in girls’ volleyball after beating Kwanthanze Girls High School 3-1.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Governor Barasa said his administration will continue investing in sports infrastructure, talent identification and development programmes, including the annual Governor’s Cup, to nurture young athletes and create opportunities for them to excel in education, employment and professional sports. He noted that sports remain a key driver of youth empowerment, social cohesion and economic development.

Governor Barasa also announced that he will facilitate a strong fan contingent to travel to Tanzania and rally behind the two teams as they fly the flags of Kakamega County and Kenya. The FEASSSA Games will be held in Morogoro from 14th to 23rd August 2026, where the teams will seek to uphold Kakamega’s rich sporting tradition on the East African stage.

Governor Barasa was accompanied by the CECM for Social Services, Sports, Youth, Gender and Culture, CPA Jackline Kakai Masicha; Chief Officers; officials of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) led by Kakamega County Chairman Mr. Lazarous Makokha; principals; coaches; and other County Government officials.
