For tuk-tuk operators in Kakamega, the sector is more than a means of moving people and goods from one place to another; it is a source of income, a pathway to self-reliance and an important part of the local economy. The tuk-tuk sector has reshaped local transport while creating livelihoods for thousands of young people across the County.

Today, H.E. Governor Dr. Fernandes Barasa joined tuk-tuk operators at Kakamega Approved School grounds in Lurambi Sub-County for a Tuk-tuk Operators’ Empowerment Drive and the launch of their Strategic Plan.

In his address to the jubilant operators, Governor Barasa said his administration recognises the important role played by the sector in keeping the local economy moving and continues to create conditions that allow the tuk-tuk enterprise to grow through better roads, fair policies and an enabling business environment. He said the County Government will continue supporting organised groups to create better economic opportunities for their members, while urging operators to embrace initiatives that can improve their incomes and livelihoods.

He also encouraged those who have attained the voting age to register and participate actively in the country’s democratic processes. Governor Barasa said the support forms part of a wider social and economic empowerment agenda through which his administration is putting more resources and opportunities in the hands of organised groups. He cited the ongoing KSh.60 million Social Protection Grants Programme, which is supporting women, persons with disabilities and youth groups across the County.

The Governor further called on residents to support development efforts being implemented through cooperation between the two levels of government, citing the Kakamega Level Six Hospital, modern markets and the transformation of Bukhungu Stadium among key projects. During the empowerment drive, H.E. President Dr. William Ruto supported the tuk-tuk operators with a contribution of KSh.2 million.

Also present were Senate Majority Leader Hon. Aaron Cheruiyot, Members of the National Assembly led by the host, Hon. Titus Khamala, President Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, Members of the County Assembly, and other leaders and stakeholders from across the country.
