Education remains a key priority in Governor Barasa’s Six-Point Agenda, with every child being given an opportunity to realise their potential, regardless of their socio-economic circumstances.

This morning, H.E Governor Dr.Fernandes Barasa presided over the 2026 Barasa Jamii Scholarship Awards at Golf Hotel, Kakamega. The programme, implemented in partnership with ACESS Kenya, has now entered its fifth cohort. Since 2022, the scholarship has supported 333 students through a cumulative investment of KSh.254 million. This year, KSh.54 million has been awarded in full scholarships to 89 bright students from across Kakamega County, all from underprivileged backgrounds and pursuing various courses in institutions of higher learning across the country.

In his address, Governor Barasa said the County Government disbursed KSh.180 million in bursaries during the last financial year, benefiting 47,793 students. Of this, KSh.150 million supported secondary school students, while KSh.30 million went to students in County Polytechnics.

As part of the expanded support for higher and medical education, Governor Barasa also announced the opening of applications for the Kakamega County Revolving Fund and Afya Elimu Fund for the 2026/2027 Financial Year, with an initial KSh.100 million seed investment. Applications opened on August 17 and close on August 31, 2026. Eligible students have been advised to apply through the Higher Education Financing (HEF) Students’ Portal.

The event was attended by the Country Director of ACESS Kenya Dr. Antony Mutevane, County Executive Committee Members led by CECM for Education Dr. Benard Amwayi, County Secretary and Head of Public Service Dr. Lawrence Omuhaka, and other County Government officials.
