KAKAMEGA MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITY COMMISIONED

The County Government of Kakamega Tuesday commissioned a medical waste management facility marking a major milestone in management of medical waste in the County.

Deputy Governor H.E Prof. Philip Museve Kutima who officiated the ceremony, on behalf of H.E Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, at the County General Hospital grounds, Kakamega, said the facility will save the County millions of shillings spent on disposal of medical waste in line with the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) requirements on waste management.

Prof. Kutima noted that in addition to the local health facilities, neighbouring counties are also expected to make use of the facility, enhancing the revenue generated locally.

“The County is developing a health care waste policy that will provide a framework in operationalization of waste treatment and disposal which will include charges, disposal, maintenance and human resource,” he explained.

Kakamega Health Services CECM Dr Collins Matemba termed the project a game changer in the health sector and assured partners that his ministry will ensure efficient and effecient functioning of the equipment.

The partners include the National Government’s Ministry of Health, the Council of Governors (CoG) and the Belgian Government.
