COUNTY GOVERNMENT SUBSIDISES FARMING
The county government of Kakamega on Wednesday for the third year in a row fulfilled Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya’s manifesto of providing subsidised farming services to all farmers by delivering planting fertiiser and Maize seed at half prices. This comes a month after the goverment supported the farmers till their lands with county tractors, also at half the market price.
Oparanya, who was airbone the better part of the day, managed to land in six Sub-Counties where he first launched the distribution of the subsidised fertiliser and maize seed to registered farmers at Sango Market in Likuyani before proceeding to Chepusai grounds in Lugari, Ingavira market in Malava, Eshilakwe market in Navakholo, Eshikhuyu dispensary in Lurambi and concluded the excercise at Mukhonje of Ilesi in Shinyalu Sub-County.
Governor Oparanya encouraged residents to embrace technology and get registered at Ward Offices so as to benefit from government subsidised farming services.
Athi River Mining Managing Director Paradeep Paunrana appreciated the gesture bestowed to his company by the County Government of Kakamega to supply farmers with tested and quality fertiliser and Maize seed, promising double harvests and soil treatment at the same time, just by applying the fertiliser as advised by Sub-County Agricultural Extension Officers.
CEC for Agriculture Kulati Wangia reported that the county has so far improved from a harvest of 16% in 2013 to the current 40% last year. This, Mr. Wangia attributed to a working devolution and commitment from all the stakeholders in the farming practice.
