COUNTY STRENGTHENS CLIMATE INFORMATION SYSTEMS THROUGH TUNZA PROJECT TO BOOST FOOD SECURITY
Kakamega County today hosted a significant Climate Information Systems (CIS) Validation Workshop under the Tunza Project, bringing together key stakeholders from across the Lake Region Economic Bloc to strengthen climate resilience and agricultural productivity.
The workshop was officially opened by Agriculture CECM, Mr Mophat Mandela, who emphasized the need for organizations to work in unity and coordinate efforts to avoid duplication of projects and maximize impact.
He also highlighted the department’s development of a bulk SMS platform that will deliver timely weather updates to farmers, enabling better decision-making and supporting food security efforts.
The workshop also focused on validating key findings from the CIS assessment, including gaps in coordination, limited last-mile delivery of climate information, and the need for more inclusive dissemination approaches. Participants worked collaboratively to co-design practical solutions that will ensure climate information reaches farmers effectively.
This initiative marks a critical step toward building resilient agricultural systems, improving planning, and ensuring that climate information translates into tangible benefits for farmers across Kakamega, Nandi, Bungoma, Busia, and Trans-Nzoia counties. Also present was Chief Officer Cooperatives, Mr Anselim Mulinya alongside other stakeholders.
