COUNTY TREE NURSERY PROJECTS TO SERVE AS LEARNING SITES FOR SCHOOLS

The County Government of Kakamega under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme, has said the tree nursery project at Luanda Dudi in Khwisero Sub-county will serve as learning centers for schools.
Speaking after commencing the inspection of climate-smart tree nursery projects established across the county as part of efforts to enhance environmental conservation and climate resilience in Khwisero Sub-County under the FLLoCA programme, the chief officer, Water and Climate change, Mrs. Mariam Were, said local communities should support afforestation. Mrs. Were said the county has facilitated the establishment of a tree nursery with 150,000 climate-friendly tree seedlings, which will be distributed to local communities to support afforestation, restore degraded ecosystems and strengthen community adaptation to climate change.
Speaking during an inspection visit to the project located at Luanda Dudi Primary school, Dr. Were said the nursery will serve not only as a source of tree seedlings but also as an educational centre where residents and learners can acquire knowledge on environmental conservation and climate action.
Dr. Were noted that the initiative is aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of climate change by promoting tree planting, increasing environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable natural resource management among communities.
She, further, stated that the project will function as a climate change resource and knowledge hub for Khwisero residents, providing information and practical learning opportunities on climate adaptation and environmental stewardship.
The inspection exercise forms part of the county’s broader commitment under the FLLoCA programme to scale up community-driven climate action projects and increase tree cover across Kakamega County
