FOOD SECURITY DRIVE GAINS MOMENTUM AS GOVERNOR BARASA ROLLS OUT FREE FARM INPUT SUPPORT PROGRAMME.

Food security, which is anchored at the core of H.E. Dr. Fernandes Barasa’s development agenda, remains central to building a self-reliant and prosperous Kakamega County. In a renewed effort to boost farm production and support vulnerable households, Governor Barasa today launched a countywide free fertiliser and maize seed distribution exercise at Bukura in Lurambi Sub-County, alongside a large-scale rollout in Butsotso South Ward.
The initiative comes amid the high cost of farm inputs, which continues to lock many low-income households out of meaningful agricultural production. The programme specifically targets vulnerable groups, enabling them to actively participate in food production during the ongoing long rains and the upcoming short rains season.
Speaking during the exercise, Governor Barasa said agriculture plays a critical role in growing the county’s economy and improving livelihoods. He noted that the programme is aimed at reducing poverty and enhancing household incomes through increased farm productivity. He further announced that the county government will distribute free top-dressing fertiliser within the next two weeks to help farmers maximise yields, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to timely farm inputs, extension services, and the adoption of modern farming methods.
The Governor also updated residents on key development projects being implemented in partnership with the national government, including progress at Bukhungu Stadium and the upgrade of Kakamega Level Six Hospital. He added that bursaries for Grade 10 learners will be released once schools reopen. Ongoing projects in the ward include the construction of ECDE centres, health facilities, and road infrastructure aimed at improving service delivery and livelihoods.
Governor Barasa urged eligible residents to register as voters, emphasising the importance of public participation in shaping the county’s development agenda. He was accompanied by Members of the County Assembly led by Majority Leader Hon. Philip Maina and the host Hon. Gildon Shioso, Members of the County Executive Committee led by the CECM for Agriculture Mr. Mophat Mandela.
