IMPLEMENTATION OF KAKAMEGA COUNTY AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT ON COURSE
Affordable housing is one of the National Government’s Big Four agenda that H.E Governor Dr. FCPA Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya is keen on actualizing.
Kakamega County Secretary and Head of Public Service Madam Jacinta Aluoch Odhiambo Wednesday afternoon held a meeting with a delegation from Axonometric Consortium Ltd, when they presented their development plans for approval for the affordable houses program, within the Kakamega Municipality aiming at putting in place mechanisms to ensure smooth implementation of the project.
Speaking on behalf of the CECM for Lands & Housing, Hon. Robert Makhanu, Madam Jacinta welcomed the investors and assured them of the Government’s enabling environment in executing the project. The County has allocated land for construction of the units in addition to setting in place policies to ensure the project materializes.
“This is a timely project since housing is a major challenge in the County’s urban centres, both for the staff and non-staff; we shall ensure that the required processes and procedures are ready to operationalize the project,” she said.
The Consortium Chairman Mr. Shem Tai said they have the capacity to construct 1,700 houses in three sites, namely Mudiri, Old airport and Kalro in phases, starting with Mudiri estate which will have 810 units. 870 houses will be constructed at the Old Airport space while 64 units will be put up at Kalro.
“We intend to launch the project in March 2021. We are constructing a mixture of one bedroom, two and three bedroom apartments and a shopping mall to serve the residents,” he said.
The houses are meant to serve County Government staff and the residents of Kakamega County.
In attendance were Director Physical Planning and Housing Mr. Stephen Chune and the Principal Human Resource Officer Madam Rose Omondi.
