STAKEHOLDERS ADVANCE PLANS FOR KAKAMEGA COUNTY COURT

Following Chief Justice Martha Koome’s consent to H.E. Dr. FCPA Fernandes Barasa’s proposal to establish a county court in Kakamega, a stakeholders’ task force held its second meeting at the Kakamega County Headquarters to discuss preparations for the court. The meeting focused on the steps required to have the court operational by December 2026 and ensure that justice services are brought closer to the people of Kakamega.

The meeting brought together the County Security Team led by Mr. John Otido, representatives from the Office of the County Attorney and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Kakamega Central OCPD Mr. Vincent Cherotich, OCS Mr. Chrispin Mbata and other stakeholders. The team discussed how the different institutions will work together to support the establishment and smooth running of the court.

Among the issues discussed was the sharing and review of relevant county laws and by-laws, identification of matters that will be handled by the court, preparation of the required offices and support services, and coordination among the institutions involved. The stakeholders also reviewed the practical steps that need to be completed before the targeted December 2026 operationalisation.

The proposed court will add to the range of justice services already available in Kakamega, including the High Court, Environment and Land Court, Employment and Labour Relations Court and subordinate courts. The Judiciary has said its collaboration with the County Government is aimed at improving access to justice and bringing services closer to residents. The task force will continue with consultations and preparations as the County Government works with the Judiciary and other stakeholders towards the December 2026 target.
