Kakamega County continues to cement its reputation as a sporting powerhouse after delivering a stellar performance at the just-concluded Western Regional Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) games. With unmatched skill, discipline, and determination, the countyโ€™s schools dominated the regional contests across multiple disciplines, proudly securing spots at the upcoming national championships, set to be hosted right here in Kakamega County.
Leading the charge were the formidable Scorpions of Musingu High School, who clinched the boys’ football title with a commanding 2โ€“0 victory over Vihiga Countyโ€™s Ebwali Secondary School. Their tactical brilliance and crowd-pulling talent earned them a well-deserved regional crown. In girlsโ€™ soccer, Butere Girls emerged as soccer champions, underlining their dominance and consistency in the sport.
In netball, Mukuyu Secondary School impressed with a strong finish, while St. Peterโ€™s Mumias and Koyonzo Boys carried the countyโ€™s flag in boysโ€™ rugby. On the girlsโ€™ side, Mwira Girls and Eregi Girls powered through in rugby, proving the strength of Kakamegaโ€™s female teams. St. Peterโ€™s Mumias and Butere Girls also qualified in boysโ€™ and girlsโ€™ basketball respectively, while Malava Boys and Bishop Sulumeti Lugari Girls secured victories in volleyball; among other schools that delivered victory in different sports disciplines.
During the official closing ceremony, Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa congratulated the teams for their outstanding performances and sportsmanship, noting that their achievements reflect the countyโ€™s commitment to nurturing talent and empowering youth through sports. โ€œThis success is not only a testament to the individual team’s hard work with support from schools management and coaches, but also a reflection of our commitment to developing sporting talent from the grassroots,โ€ he said.
All eyes now turn to the National KSSSA Championships and the FEASSSA Games, where Kakamega County will not only participate but host the showdown. With home-ground advantage and passionate support, expectations are high that the countyโ€™s stars will rise once again, this time on both national and regional East African stages. Congratulations to all our qualified school teams across all categories. Go forth and make Kakamega proud.
