The construction of the long-stalled Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital has received renewed momentum following a joint effort between the National and County Governments.
H.E Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa today hosted Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru and Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga for the official handover of the facility to the Department of Defence, which will oversee its completion.
The 750-bed capacity Level 6 hospital, which has remained a white elephant for years, is set to resume construction next week, with a six-month timeline for completion.
Under the new agreement, the National Government will contribute KSh 500 million, while Kakamega County will allocate KSh 300 million to complete the project.
Speaking during the official handover, Governor Barasa noted that the hospital is a key priority in his healthcare agenda and will greatly improve access to specialized medical services in the Western region. The facility will also help decongest nearby hospitals, enhance emergency care, promote medical research, and create jobs for healthcare professionals and residents.
Once complete, the referral hospital is expected to become a major medical tourism hub for the region and a model for public healthcare delivery in Kenya.
