The County Government of Kakamega is taking concrete steps to support widows through well-structured programs that respond directly to their needs. These include access to free farm inputs, social protection grants, improved Kienyeji chicken, bursaries for vulnerable children, and fair participation in county procurement opportunities.
Speaking today during the International Widows Day event held at ACK Butere and attended by more than 5,000 widows from Butere and Khwisero sub-counties, Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa emphasized the County’s long-term approach to inclusion and support. The event was coordinated by the Anglican Church, led by Rt. Rev. Bishop Rose Okeno.
Governor Barasa highlighted his administrationโ€™s commitment to enhancing the wellbeing of over 150,000 widows across Kakamega by creating an environment for them to thrive socially and economically. โ€œWeโ€™re not just acknowledging their presence, weโ€™re working to improve their lives through access, resources, and real opportunity,โ€ he said.
The Governor also recognized the valuable role of the Church in providing community-based care and encouraged stronger partnerships in reaching and supporting vulnerable families.
