This afternoon, His Excellency Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa broke ground for the construction of a Sh90 million maternity hospital at Likuyani Level IV Hospital. The new 60-bed facility will be the biggest maternity unit and is expected to be completed by January 2026. It will include a labour ward, theatre, antenatal and postnatal units, a newborn unit, kangaroo room, and a patient relaxation park.
The hospital is part of the Tutunze Kakamega programme, supported by partners Jacaranda Health, ThinkWell, Harvard University, and Rescue.co, under the Service Delivery Redesign (SDR) plan. Governor Barasa said the project aims to improve maternal health and reduce mortality rates. “We expect deliveries at this hospital to grow from 130 to over 300 each month,” he said.
He also encouraged mothers to register for the Imarisha Afya ya Mama na Mtoto *(Barasacare)* programme, which supports antenatal care, skilled delivery, and child nutrition. So far, 641 mothers have received financial support through the initiative. Similar maternity projects have already been completed at Malava and Lumakanda hospitals, with another ongoing at Matungu.
Governor Barasa also mentioned other projects in Likuyani, including water supply systems, new ECDE classrooms, upgraded dispensaries, boda boda shades, and ongoing works at Sikulu Polytechnic and Sinai Dispensary. He added that the County is setting up the Kakamega Aggregation and Industrial Park and plans to make Matunda a fully operational municipality to improve services for residents.
The event was attended by Dr. Job Makoyo, Country Director of Jacaranda Health, Members of the County Assembly led by the host MCA Hon. Brian Mafunga, and other key health sector stakeholders.
