COUNTY GOVERNMENT INTENSIFIES LAST MILE SUBSIDISED FERTILISER DISTRIBUTION AHEAD OF HEAVY RAINS
The County Government of Kakamega has stepped up last mile subsidised fertiliser distribution in partnership with the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) ahead of the heavy rains season to boost farm productivity and ensure farmers take full advantage of favourable planting conditions. Registered farmers purchase fertiliser at Ksh 2,500 per 50-kilogram bag through an E-voucher system and redeem it at designated collection centres across the county.
To ensure efficiency and accountability, trained agriculture officers have been deployed to coordinate the exercise. The fertiliser is now available at 16 county-managed collection centres, in addition to four NCPB outlets, bringing the total number of collection points to 20. Registered farmers are encouraged to collect their fertiliser at the designated collection point nearest to them.
The subsidised price was implemented following a directive by Governor FCPA Dr. Fernandes Barasa as part of efforts to reduce the cost of farm inputs and improve yields for smallholder farmers. With the ongoing rains, timely access to fertiliser is expected to increase acreage under cultivation, boost production of staple crops such as maize and beans, lower household farming costs, and improve rural livelihoods.
Additionally, the County Government has announced that free fertiliser will soon be distributed to less fortunate farmers, including widows and persons with disabilities, to promote inclusivity and ensure no household is left behind.
This programme advances Governor Barasaβs Food Security and Wealth Creation agenda, reinforcing the administrationβs commitment to inclusive agricultural support and sustainable prosperity across Kakamega County.
