H.E. Governor Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, today joined H.E. President Dr. William Samoei Ruto and other leaders at the groundbreaking ceremony for the solarisation and rehabilitation of the Shitoli Water Project in Ikolomani Sub-County, Kakamega County.
The KSh 212 million project, which had stalled for over 15 years, will expand access to clean and reliable water for over 45,000 residents across Ikolomani, Shinyalu, and surrounding areas.
The upgraded project will be powered through a 120-kilowatt solar system under the Presidentβs Last Mile Water Connectivity Program, aimed at extending water services to underserved communities. It will also include the construction of a new 18.3-kilometre distribution line serving Sigalagala, Museno, Khayega, Iguhu, Ikolomani, Musingu, and Malinya.
Once completed, the project will have a production capacity of 3.5 million litres of water per day, significantly improving water supply, reducing waterborne diseases, and supporting small-scale irrigation and other economic activities.
Governor Barasa said the initiative complements his Amatsi Khumuliango (Water at the Doorstep) programme, which seeks to bring water services closer to residents across Kakamega County. He noted that strong collaboration between the national and county governments remains key to accelerating access to clean water and improving livelihoods.
The Shitoli Water Project is expected to be completed within eight months, enhancing water access and supporting public health, education, agriculture, and economic growth in the region.
