Residents of Kakamega county commemorated the World Sight Day, an event that was marked by an eye screening exercise sponsored by the county government in partnership with CBM, Operation Eyesight- Vision Impact Project, Sightsavers- Boresha Macho project, NTSA and the National Police Service, targeting public transport operators.

Held under the theme “Love Your Eyes – Ona Vizuri, Safiri Salama,” the celebrations began with a sensitization walk from the county headquarters and brought together matatu, tuk-tuk and boda boda operators.

Speaking at the event, Director of Medical Services Dr. Stephen Wandei said the initiative was a major boost to the health and roads sectors noting that improved vision among drivers and riders will contribute to safer road use and help reduce road accidents.

Kakamega County Ophthalmologist Dr Austin Ajevi said Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital (KCGTRH) will continue providing eye screening services to members of the public through its eye clinic to promote better eye health across the county.

The event was attended by Operation Eyesight Vision Impact Project Programme Manager Mrs Jerusha Chege, Sightsavers Programme Manager Mr Samwel Eshitemi, as well as teams from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), NTSA, National Police Service Traffic Department and members of the CHMT.
