GOVERNOR ASSENTS TO TWO IMPORTANT BILLS

H.E. Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya has today assented to the Kakamega Dairy Development Corporation Bill 2018 and the Kakamega County Trade and Markets Bill 2018.

Speaking during the event, H.E. the governor said once the corporation has been legally constituted, it shall engage in commercial rearing and breeding of dairy livestock as well as develop, promote and adopt the best practices in the dairy value chain. In addition, the corporation will develop and maintain a milk processing plant in Malava sub county to provide a ready market for dairy farmers. ” It is a high time we diversified into diary industry and fisheries, as well as well-managed and supported production of production of food crops such as maize and beans, ” he added.

The Kakamega County Trade and Markets Bill 2018 on the other hand will promote and regulate trade in the county. It will also set the government free to enter into joint trade ventures with other like minded partners to promote the economy of Kakamega county. The bill will also guide the department of Trade on matters related to trade including facilitation of revenue collection, promotion of small businesses and advising on the pricing and marketing of information within the county among others.

Deputy Governor H.E. Prof. Philip Museve Kutima called on the relevant stakeholders in the dairy sector to ensure there is enough milk production in the county in anticipation of Malava dairy plant.

Present also were CEC members: Kassim Were, Hon Robert Makhanu, Joseph Indire, Rachel Okumu, and George Lutomia; Chief Officers, Kakamega Dairy Development Corporation board members, among others.
