The County Government of Kakamega, in partnership with the Fred Hollows Foundation, today held a regional eye health review meeting aimed at identifying existing gaps and areas of improvement in advancing eye care services.
Representing H. E. Governor Fernandes Barasa at the meeting, Disability Mainstreaming Coordinator, Mrs. Faith Owour, highlighted the progress made under the Governorโ€™s administration in strengthening eye health services. She noted that the County Government has made significant strides, including equipping the Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital (KCGTRH) Eye Clinic with modern equipment to enhance service delivery.
Kakamega County Eye Health Coordinator, Dr. Austin Ajevi, observed that the County has recorded notable progress in eye health services. He cited the recently launched Craig Memorial Health Centre in Nyapora as an important complementary facility that will support eye care services for patients in Kakamega County and the wider Western region.
The Fred Hollows Foundation team reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Kakamega County through continuous capacity building for eye health personnel. The organization also pledged to support the Countyโ€™s strategy of decentralizing eye care units to sub-county health facilities in order to improve accessibility and achieve sustainable eye health services.
Senior health officers from Busia, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, and Vihiga counties were present during the meeting.
