DEPUTY GOVERNOR LEADS RESIDENTS IN COMMEMORATING WORLD WATER DAY

Kakamega Deputy Governor H.E Ayub Savula today, Wednesday, represented H.E FCPA Governor Fernandes Barasa at this year’s World Water Day, an event that was held at Malava Sub-County Headquarters where he reiterated the County Government’s committment of connecting residents to safe and clean piped water in actualization of the Governor’s agenda of bringing clean water close to all households in all villages and estates across the County.

In the Governor’s speech delivered by his deputy, over 60 percent of households across the County will be connected with the essential commodity in the next five years as highlighted in the 2023-2027 County Intergrated Development Plan (CIDP). The Governor instructed the two County water companies; Kakamega County Water and Sanitation Company (KACWASCO) together with Kakamega County Rural Water and Sanitation Company (KACRWASCO) to enhance supply of water to residents by connecting 8,000 households yearly. Currently the two companies jointly serve over 43,500 households.

On his part, the DG reminded residents that the County Government has initiated ambitious projects in the Northern region of the County such as Malava and Khuvasali Water Projects in Malava as well as Musembe Water Project in Lugari Sub-County adding that their implementation will go along way in addressing perennial water shortages in the area.

County Executive Committee Member for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate change Dr Mariam Barasa asked residents to avoid deforestation, pollution and/or exploitation of water catchment areas; sentiments that were echoed by the Chairperson of Environment Committee at the County Assembly Hon. Boaz Omukunda who further assured that the Assembly will support the Executive in its quest to improve water connectivity through proper Legislations at the Floor of the House.

The theme of this year’s event was; “Accelerating Change to Water and Sanitation Crisis.”
