GOVERNOR BARASA GRACES INAUGURAL INTER-INSTITUTIONAL PEACE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT FINALS AT BUKHUNGU STADIUM

H.E. Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, OGW, this evening graced the finals of the Inter-Institutional Peace Football Tournament at Bukhungu Stadium, where Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) emerged victorious in the men’s category after defeating Shamberere National Polytechnic 2–0, while Sigalagala National Polytechnic claimed the ladies’ trophy with a 1–0 victory over MMUST.

The two-day tournament, organised by the Western Kenya Students Association and supported by the County Government of Kakamega, brought together 24 learning institutions, using the power of sport to bring young people together, foster unity and promote peaceful coexistence.

A total of KSh550,000 was awarded to the top three teams in the two categories. In the men’s category, MMUST received KSh200,000, Shamberere National Polytechnic KSh100,000 and Bushiangala Technical Training Institute (TTI) KSh50,000. In the ladies’ category, Sigalagala National Polytechnic received KSh100,000, MMUST KSh70,000 and Shamberere National Polytechnic KSh30,000.

Bushiangala TTI finished third in the men’s category, while Shamberere National Polytechnic took third place in the ladies’ category.

Speaking during the finals, Governor Barasa commended the Western Kenya Students Association for organising the inaugural tournament and partnering with the County Government of Kakamega to bring young people together through sport.

Governor Barasa said the County Government will continue supporting and nurturing talent across Kakamega by providing young people with platforms to discover, develop and showcase their abilities. He noted that the tournament has also laid a strong foundation for this year’s Governor’s Cup, which kicks off on 15 October 2026.

The event was attended by Mr. Steve Kimaiyo, representing President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet; Members of the County Assembly led by Mayoni MCA Hon. Fredrick Watitwa; members of the County Executive led by the CECM for Agriculture, Mr. Mophat Mandela; and representatives of the football fraternity led by AFC Leopards Chairman Mr. Boniface Ambani, among other guests.
