GOVERNOR BARASA LEADS NATIONAL-COUNTY PARTNERSHIP TOWARDS LEVEL 6 HOSPITAL COMPLETION
December 2026 will see the completion of the Kakamega County Level 6 Teaching and Referral Hospital, a major healthcare investment being advanced under the leadership of H.E. Governor Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, OGW, through a strong partnership between the County and National Governments.
A joint team from the Kakamega County Department of Health and the National Government, through the Ministry of Health (MOH), was on site today to inspect the ongoing works at the facility and assess preparations for the transition of services upon completion.
The team, led by CECM for Health Services CPA Livingstone Imbayi and Dr. Amos Oyoko from the MOH Directorate of Standards, also toured various departments at Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital (KCGTRH) to assess current service delivery.
Dr. Imbayi said the Department of Health Services is ready to facilitate the transition of services to the new facility once construction is completed. The MOH delegation expressed satisfaction with the services being offered at KCGTRH and indicated that it would make positive recommendations to the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, following the inspection.
Once operational, the Level 6 Teaching and Referral Hospital will significantly expand access to specialised care and strengthen Kakamega’s capacity to serve as a major referral centre for the Western region, reshaping the region’s healthcare landscape.
The project reflects Governor Barasa’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure while demonstrating the value of collaboration between the County and National Governments in delivering major public investments that improve services for citizens.
Also present were CECM for Public Works Eng. Patrick Kundu, Chief Officer Medical Services Dr. David Alilah, Chief Officer Public Health Mrs. Rose Muhanda, Chief Officer Public Works Mr. Pascal Were, Director Medical Services Dr. Stephen Wandei, and KCGTRH Medical Superintendent Dr. Christian Lamba, among other officials.
