Kakamega County Secures Ecotourism Project at Mumunyonzo Dam
The County Government of Kakamega, in partnership with the Tourism Fund, is set to establish an ecotourism project at Mumunyonzo Water Dam in Nzoia Ward.
The project will be implemented in two phases. Phase one, to be handed over to the contractor on 28th August 2024, includes a conference facility, communal eatery, and directional signage. Phase two will feature a jetty, walkways, parking lot, and a recreational motorboat.
Speaking during a consultative meeting at the site, Trade, Industrialisation and Tourism CECM Hon. Godfrey Owori said the initiative aligns with Governor Barasa’s agenda of wealth creation through tourism promotion. The project will provide Matunda Municipality with a key recreational facility, create jobs, and boost county revenue.
Area MP Hon. Innocent Mugabe, a member of the National Assembly’s Tourism Committee, commended the county for providing land and technical support, and thanked the Tourism Fund for investing in Western Kenya’s tourism potential. He also highlighted other priority sites, including Mawe Tatu Hills, Kakamega Forest, and Ikhongo Murwi.
Also present were Nzoia MCA Hon. Collins Chapurukha, Sinoko MCA Hon. Anthony Mix, Sango MCA Hon. Kenneth Lutilo, and county directors for Tourism and Lands.
