The Ministry of Lands, Housing, Urban Areas and Physical Planning through the Kakamega Municipality Board has inaugurated the Kakamega Municipality Kiosks, Toilets, Containers, Stalls and Open Spaces Allocation and Management Committee to provide efficient and accountable management of the facilities.
In his opening remarks during the event held on Wednesday morning at Golf Hotel Kakamega, the CECM Hon. Robert Kundu Makhanu, who is also a Member of the Municipality Board said that the committee’s main mandate is to boost revenue collection in the Municipality by sealing leakages and providing excellent services to residents as outlined in H.E Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya’s manifesto.
Hon. Makhanu observed that the composition of the Committee cuts across the County Government Departments namely ICT, Survey, Revenue, Legal, Public Health among others in order to address cross cutting issues such as illegal operations and allocation of the facilities.
“The responsibility of this Committee is to bring sanity by zoning the Municipality and those in charge so as to get rid of cartels and enhance revenue generation,” the CECM asserted, revealing that both Kakamega and Mumias Municipalities will have independent budgets to ensure smooth running of operations.
Kakamega Municipality Board Chairperson Rtd Col. Job Akhulia on his part said there is need for proper record management of facilities with proper coding and frequent updates for the purposes of accountability and sealing revenue leakages. He urged the Members to carry out their duties with integrity adding that their selection was anchored on their vast experiences in leadership and resource management.
The Committee which cosists of various Departmental Heads will be chaired by Mr. Dominic Makori and Mr. Ramadhan Wekhungu.
Mumias Municipality Chairperson Mr. Sammy Obingo and Kakamega & Mumias Municipalities Managers Madam Violet Ofisi and Mr. Philip Menda respectively were in attendance.
