KAKAMEGA WASTE MANAGEMENT TECHNICAL WORKING GROUP REVIEWS CIRCULAR ECONOMY PARTNERSHIP

The Kakamega County Waste Management Technical Working Group on Thursday assessed progress of the implementation of the partnership between the County Government of Kakamega, Practical Action and Regen Organics on the Circular Economy for Household Organic Waste programme.

Key areas reviewed during the meeting included the promotion of waste separation at source among 15,000 households, support for informal waste workers to collect and handle segregated waste, establishment of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and creation of sustainable employment opportunities, particularly for women and vulnerable groups engaged in the waste management value chain.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for the technical team to evaluate progress, identify challenges and strengthen coordination among the partners to ensure the programme achieves its intended outcomes. The initiative is expected to contribute to cleaner communities, improved livelihoods for waste workers and increased recovery and reuse of valuable waste materials.

The programme runs from 2024 to 2028 and seeks to transform household waste management in Kakamega by promoting a circular economy approach where waste is treated as a resource while creating environmental, social and economic benefits for communities.

The meeting was attended by the Chief Officer for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change CPA Bill Silingi, alongside representatives from Practical Action, Regen Organics.
