Today, Kakamega County staff stood in solidarity to mourn the untimely passing of their colleague, Chief Officer Jessica Weku Wesonga, remembered for her dedication, humility, and commitment to public service.

Leading the county workforce in paying tributes on behalf of Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa, First Lady Prof. Janet Kassilly Barasa described Ms. Jessica as humble, cheerful, and deeply dedicated to public service. She particularly recognized her unwavering support for community-focused programs spearheaded through her office, including the reintegration of teen mothers into school and the menstrual hygiene initiative. She urged county employees to emulate Jessica’s admirable qualities of loyalty, compassion, and commitment.

Mama Janet also used the occasion to encourage the public, especially women to take advantage of screening services for breast and cervical cancer, while men get screened for prostate cancer, noting that early detection makes the disease easier to treat and manage.

The funeral program began with a memorial service led by The Very Reverend Andrew Muruka of ACK Christ Church Kakamega, held at Bukhungu Stadium. This was followed by the cortege making its way to the late’s matrimonial home in Shinyulu Village, Butere Sub-County, with stopovers at St. Anne’s Lukusi Parish and her ancestral home in Weyaba Village, Matungu Sub-County. A requiem mass will be held on Friday at her home in Butere. The final tributes and funeral mass are scheduled for Saturday at Shinyulu Primary School grounds, after which the burial rites will be conducted at her Shinyulu home.

The service was attended by Members of the County Assembly led by Majority Leader Hon. CPA Philip Maina, County Executive coordinated by County Secretary Dr. Lawrence Omuhaka, Morphat Mandela, and Dr. Bonface Okoth, members of the County Public Service Board, all united in paying their last respects to a colleague remembered with honour and affection.
