KAKAMEGA MARKS WORLD FISHERIES DAY
Kakamega County Deputy Governor H.E. Philip Museve Kutima led residents and fish farmers to mark this year’s World Fisheries Day themed “Sustainable Fisheries for Food and National Security” at Jafi Fish farm, a leading hatchery, in Butsotso Central ward, Lurambi sub county, Kakamega County.
H.E. the deputy governor who also doubles up as the CECM for Agriculture, Livestock Production, Fisheries development and Cooperatives commended the current registered fish farmers in the county totalling to 7, 845 with 8, 336 fish ponds for embracing fish farming for economic purposes. “Fish farming plays an integral role in diversification of farming in our county and country as well improvement of food security, nutrition and creation of employment,” he said.
He announced that the county government will further increase the allocation to ensure growth of the activity in the next financial year. The current allocation stands at Ksh. 90 million. Prof. Kutima however decried rampant theft of fish from fish ponds in the county.
In attendance were Chief Officers led by the Livestock Production and Fisheries development Chief Officer Dr. Kelly Nelima, Advisors in the office of the Governor led by Economic Advisor Mr. Paul Posho, Members of County Assembly led by the Agriculture committee Chairman Hon. Geoffrey Omumatera and host MCA Hon. Liston Ambundo, Directors and other senior government officers.
