COUNTY OFFICIALLY TAKES OVER THE LIBRARY SERVICES FUNCTION

The National Government through the Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) has officially handed over all Library Services functions to the County Government. This follows H.E FCPA Governor Fernandes Barasa’s passionate calls to have all devolved functions transferred to the devolved units.

The exercise took place on Tuesday at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega and was presided over by the County Secretary and Head of Public Service Dr Lawrence Omuhaka and overseen by a team from the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC) and KNLS led by Ms Angeline Hongo and Patrick Mumbo respectively.

The County Secretary welcomed the new human resource and disclosed that the County Government has already factored the Officers in the 2023/24 Fiscal Year’s budget and commended the IGRTC and KNLS for facilitating a smooth handover exercise.

Kakamega County has two functional facilities; Kakamega and Lusumu Libraries situated in Kakamega Municipality and Navakholo Sub-County respectively.

Earlier on the Chief Officer for Sports, Youth and Library Services Mr Joseph Abucheri and his counterpart at the Social Services, Gender and Culture docket Ms Leah Shisia led a delegation from IGRTC and KNLS on an inspection tour of the two facilities where they came to terms with the existing property including land, furniture and stationery.

This Financial Year the County Government allocated Kshs 7.3 Million towards developing and equipping the two facilities in a bid to boost Social Development and Education, key agenda of Governor Fernandes Barasa’s Manifesto.
