GOVERNOR BARASA JOINS PRESIDENT RUTO FOR 61ST LABOUR DAY CELEBRATIONS IN VIHIGA COUNTY

H.E. Dr. Fernandes Barasa, FCPA, joined H.E. President William Ruto and other national and regional leaders at Chavakali High School grounds in Vihiga County for the 61st Labour Day celebrations. The occasion brought together workers, trade unions, employers, and government officials from across the country to honour the labour movement that has powered Kenya’s growth and development.
The leaders commended workers for their dedication, resilience, and contribution to nation-building, even as the Government announced an increase in general wages by 12 per cent and agricultural wages by 15 per cent. The move was hailed as a significant step in improving livelihoods and recognising the critical role played by workers in sustaining the economy.
In his address, President Ruto emphasized the Government’s commitment to accelerating social and economic transformation through targeted investments in infrastructure, industrial growth, and job creation under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. He noted the need to expand opportunities for small businesses and improve living standards across both urban and rural areas.
The President highlighted key infrastructure projects set to benefit the Western region, including Kakamega County. These include the upgrading of the Mau Summit–Malaba Road and the dualling of the 170-kilometre Rironi–Naivasha–Mau Summit Road, which commenced on November 28, 2025. He noted that the projects will enhance connectivity, improve road safety, and facilitate efficient movement of goods and people.
He further cited the planned extension of the Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha to Malaba as a major boost to cargo transport and trade efficiency. The National Government also affirmed its collaboration with county governments, including Kakamega, in implementing key projects such as the Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital and the modernisation of Bukhungu Stadium.
Governor Barasa’s presence proved Kakamega’s firm commitment to collaborating with the National Government in advancing job creation and improving the livelihoods of residents.
