KAKAMEGA DECLARES TOTAL WAR ON ARMYWORMS

Kakamega County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock and Cooperatives CPA Geoffrey Omulayi has assured farmers in the County that his Ministry is on course with eradication of armyworm pests that have largely infested maize and beans crops in various areas of the County mainly Matungu, Mumias West, Mumias East, Navakholo, Malava, as well as parts of Butere and Khwisero Sub-Counties.

The CECM disclosed the County Government has procured pesticides, equipment and other protective gear worth Ksh 4 million and trained youths and extension officers in each Sub-County in reinforcing the structured war against the insects. In addition, Mr. Omulayi explained, the Government has also embarked on a campaign to sensitize farmers on the best way to combat the pests.

“We are also in close contact with the National Government through the State Department for Agriculture and to this end I am happy to note that the National Government has accepted to boost our efforts in managing and controlling these lethal pests by supplying us with more chemicals and other required support necessary to protect our crops,” said Mr Omulayi.

Today the County Executive-led team executed the mission in Mumias East Sub-County.

Chief Officer for Agriculture Mr. Hillary Onjoro and his Director Madam Metrine Nafuna together with Sub-County and Ward Agricultural Extension Officers were also present.
