KAKAMEGA SLOTS IN BID TO HOST SOYA AWARDS

Kakamega County will today be presenting her bid to host the 2022 Kenyan Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA).

The County Executive Member for Social Services, Youths, Women Empowerment, Sports and Culture Mr. Kassim Were, who is currently in Naivasha for the presentation on behalf of Kakamega Governor H.E DR. FCPA Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya has exuded confidence that Kakamega County is capable of hosting the high level fete which is held annually to recognize sports personalities and organizations in Kenya.

“As the home of renowned sportsmen, women and institutions, we have submitted our request to the SOYA organizing committee to allow Kakamega County the chance of hosting the event,” the Governor’s request to the committee as expressed by the CECM read.

SOYA was founded 17 years ago by the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) President Dr. Paul Tergat. The Awards Gala currently features more than 800 sports personalities and invited guests. Next year’s SOYA awards ceremony is scheduled for January.

Earlier on Thursday, Mr. Were attended the Craftsmen and Women Trade fair Exhibition at Mulu Mutisya grounds in Machakos County where he stated that culture discourse is key in unlocking the innovative industry of crafts in Kenya. The CECM added that product development is essential in accessing local and international markets. Twenty one counties participated in this year’s event.
